Belfast to Host Regional Job Fair

The city of Belfast is hosting a regional job fair.

They'll have more than 40 employers coming together next week for job seekers.

"Belfast has been really focused on growing the town but also the region, and we can't grow unless we are attracting people to work here," said the Our Town Belfast Executive Director, Breanna Bebb.

The coastal community of Belfast is unique. Windows aren't shuttered in the winter. Parking spaces are always full.

And while business is strong and their economy is diverse, city workers say there's a shortage of employees applying.

"People are leaving the state. Young people are leaving the state. People aren't coming back to the state. So it's not, like, at all unique to our community," said Bebb.

A city councilor says when MBNA arrived in the early 1990s, it made Belfast a diverse job destination. Now a Bank of America, big companies like it that employ hundreds are still looking to grow.

"You know, not every part of the state of Maine has Belfast's good fortune, but anywhere along the coast people are having a hard time finding employees," said Belfast City Councilor Michael Hurley.

Six groups are coming together next week to host a regional job fair.

Not only for Belfast jobs or coastal residents. For example, Viking Lumber is hiring for their Warren and Hancock locations.

"Basically, we are really willing to teach anybody who comes in who wants to learn and, as well as, advance. You may come in as entry level, but if you want to advance and grow yourself within the company, there's lots of opportunities to do that here," said Sarah Marriner, human resources at Viking Lumber.

Not only is the fair free to all job seekers but all experience levels, as well.

The job fair will be on Tuesday, March 7th from 10 – 2 p.m. at the University of Maine Hutchinson center in Belfast.

For more information, you can call the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce at 338-5900 or Our Town Belfast at 218-1158.
