Thousands turn out for Montgomery Regional Job Fair - WSFA

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Thousands of people strolled through the Cramton Bowl Multiplex on Wednesday in search of a job.

WSFA 12 News joined the Alabama Department of Labor and the City of Montgomery for the Montgomery Regional Job Fair and it was a success.

In the 4-hour span of the event, 3,100 job seekers attended the event.

Many were doing more than just handing out resumes, there were interviews conducted on site and plenty of applications filled out.

"Having that in-person connection and being able to smile and shake someone's hand and let them tell us what they are interested in is very helpful," said Baptist Health nurse recruiter Stacey Courson.

Courson believes they collected at least 500 resumes.

She says she was impressed with many of those seeking employment and has no doubt people she met today will be offered a job.

"We had a gentleman who was looking to relocate. He has experience and qualifications for a position that we are looking for, so we will be contacting him for an interview. So, that's very exciting for us," explained Courson.

She says there are dozens of positions at Baptist Health which need to be filled.

Within the job fair, 1,800 jobs were up for grabs with a wide range of types of jobs from health care to administrative to manufacturing.

No matter what the actual position is, recruiters say there are things which help people stand out above the crowd to land a job.

"I think the things that are most noticeable are dress professionally, making great eye contact, seeming very interested and being proactive in a job search, being prepared, asking questions about the positions, and just engaging in a great conversation with the recruiter and people representing the company," advised Courson.

We also asked about resumes and if they even mattered. Employers gave a resounding yes, saying they are a snapshot of someone's skills and abilities.

Some advice from experts on a good resume: they should be clean, to the point, and very specific about skills, education, and work experience.
