Struggle to find jobs evident at Hope Fest job fair - News3LV

LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) -- Nevada's unemployment rate was 7.1 percent for the month of April, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The struggle to find jobs was evident Saturday at the Community Hope Fest job fair, hosted by the Urban Center of Las Vegas Jobs HELP Program.

Angelica Gibbs, 23, and Etta Jones, 25, were among those who stopped by to find work. The young mothers said they want to go back to school and support their children.

"This is going to be my third kid. I want to go back to school and get a nursing career," said Jones. "I am looking for a job because I'm struggling right now, so I'm trying to be a better mom to provide for my kids."

Gibbs said she wants to pursue a career in criminal justice. The mother of two said finding a job is the first step to funding her education.

"Time is flying by every day. I don't want to sit at home anymore," Gibbs said. "I just want to work so my kids can have the chance to become a better person when they grow up."

Franklin Davis, director for the event, said the goal of the annual job fair is to connect employers with prospective employees.

"We wanted to help the single parent mom, the military veteran struggling after returning from overseas. We wanted to help the homeless guy who can't find a job. We wanted to make a difference," said Davis. "If we get one person to find a job today we're happy because that's one more person than yesterday."
