City of Detroit job fair continues Saturday - Detroit Free Press

A City of Detroit job fair where 350 jobs are being offered continues today at Cobo Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Detroit is hiring 150 police officers, 70 EMS technicians, 40 bus drivers and various other positions. Applicants are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their résumés to the fair.

About 1,350 people attended the job fair on Friday, said Michael Hall, the city's director of human resources and labor relations. Hall said those attending today should be ready to sell themselves.

"We want people ready to come and compete for the jobs," Hall said. "These are good-paying jobs with good benefits."

The city will give preference when hiring to Detroit residents and honorably discharged veterans.

The jobs range from park maintenance, which starts at $12.15 an hour, to general manager of the public works department, which has a starting salary of $61,436.

More details about the vacancies, including qualification requirements and pay, can be found at http://ift.tt/1hIiDzQ.

City officials will be on hand to explain the job openings. Those interested must fill out online job applications, either at the fair or elsewhere.

Eric Betts, 23, was among those who stopped by the fair on Friday. Wearing a black shirt and tie, Betts said he's been unemployed for about three months. He had been working construction jobs and at an Asian diner.

"I need a job, period. That's the main reason why I'm here," he said.

Betts of Detroit said he plans to upload his résumé online for a couple of the jobs he found interesting. He mentioned the available EMS positions.

"I'm going to go home on the computer and fill out everything," he said.

The job fair also features workshops to teach interviewing techniques and how to build a résumé. A booth with information about how to sign up for health care available through the Affordable Care Act also will be set up.

Free parking for the job fair is available on the Cobo Center rooftop.
