KEARNEY — Employers who participated in Thursday's Central Nebraska Job Fair said they encounter a variety of challenges filling vacancies and making new hires for expansion. Among the challenges is finding candidates in a region where the unemployment rates are among the lowest in Nebraska. Custer County's 2.2 percent unemployment is lowest in the state, and Buffalo County's 2.7 percent isn't far behind. Twenty-six businesses and employment agencies were at the job fair, organized by the Kearney Hub and sponsored by Baldwin Filters, a partner of Parker Hannifin. "It's been a good, decent turnout. The quality of candidates has been good," said Ryan Brown, recruiting coordinator for The Buckle. Meijer is hosting a job fair Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017 to hire 400 new people in Greater Cincinnati. The retailer is looking to hire dozens of people at each of its 11 stores in southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Potential candidates can go to any location to apply for available positions and be interviewed. Their university is using a different approach to the typical college job fair. It's called a reverse career fair. Instead of companies setting up booths to recruit employment candidates, it's the students marketing themselves to potential employers. As a senior in college, Jenna Michaud is just beginning to dip her toe into the job market. She says she enjoys the school's unique version of the job fair.
