 Mercy Health — Springfield's largest employer and the largest health network in the state of Ohio — is continuing to hire for new and open positions in the region, this time focusing on its Urbana campus. The network will host an open job fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Mercy Health-Urbana Hospital, 904 Scioto St. The hospital system has 60 positions for registered nurses, state trained nursing aids and licensed practical nurses available, as well as jobs for medical assistants, respiratory therapists, and dietary and environmental services staff. That's on top of the 150 jobs Mercy Health looked to fill at a job fair in Springfield earlier this month. The job fair comes in the wake of a merger announcement between Mercy Health and Bon Secours, an East Coast-based health network. The proposed merger, which is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, will create one of the largest health networks in the nation, spanning a wide area in the eastern United States. » RELATED: Mercy Health merger: Facts and figures about the company Nanette Bentley, a Mercy spokeswoman, said those who might be hired at the job fair won't be affected by the coming merger. "If anything, we believe this will create new development opportunities in the future," Bentley said. The merger had been in the works for months prior to the decision to host a job fair, she said. "We're always looking for qualified individuals," Daniels said. "There's a need for sure in the area." She said while these positions will be filled in Urbana-area locations like Urbana Hospital, Mercy Health Physicians and the McAuley Senior Living Center, more jobs in the area also need to be filled. "We have a senior behavioral unit at our Urbana campus that has a great need right now," Daniels said. This job fair is the second hiring event Mercy Health has hosted this month. Another job event, focused on positions at the Springfield Regional Medical Center and nearby facilities, sought to bring in 150 employees. Daniels said there's another job fair planned for mid-March that will take place in Dayton and focus on any positions not filled at this fair. "We're trying to fill some of the same positions but we want to get people from a diverse area," she said. » RELATED: Urbana hospital gets $3M in updates, new name Mercy Health, a non-profit Catholic-based health network, has its headquarters in Cincinnati and is the largest employer in the Springfield area and also the largest health system in Ohio. It employs more than 33,500 people across Ohio and Kentucky and is one of the top five employers in the Buckeye State. Bon Secours, another non-profit Catholic-based network, already has an extensive range covering six states and more than 24,000 associates. Under the merger, the combined network will cover more than 40 hospitals and 1,000 post-care sites in seven states in the eastern U.S., with more than 2,100 doctors and other licensed medical practitioners among its total employee count of over 57,000. The new network will become one of the 20 largest health systems in the U.S. and the fifth largest Catholic-based system in the country, with more than $8 billion in net operating value.
