Detroit Public Schools holds job fair to hire 100 teachers | Crain's ... - Crain's Detroit Business

Detroit Public Schools Community District is hosting a job fair Tuesday for new teaching applicants.

DPS is looking to fill 100 positions across all grade levels and disciplines in its 97-school system for the upcoming school year, said Chrystal Wilson, deputy executive director of communications.

On-the-spot interviews and conditional offers will be offered to qualified applicants, she said. Those attending are encouraged to bring resumes and apply online first at the school district's website.

Most of the positions are full time, Wilson said. Salaries depend on experience and education. Negotiations are ongoing for teacher salari es next school year, but in 2016 they started at $35,600 for teachers with a bachelor's degree and capped at $65,900, Wilson said.

"As we continue with enrollment and recruitment efforts over the summer, we will fill schools that manifest the needs," Wilson said.

Critical teaching needs are in the areas of mathematics, language arts, career tech education, world languages, science and integrated science, special education, early childhood, art and music education and social studies.

This is the second major DPS job fair in the past couple months. In May, more than 200 candidates attended a fair and 90 conditional offers were made, Wilson said. The district would be pleased to see similar turnout this time around, she added.

"We know teachers have graduated from universities and it would be great to have them attend," she said.

Another job fair is planned for July or August, but specifics are pending.
