Veterans Job Fair brings personal connections to the hiring process - Kotatv

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - KOTA Territory veterans looking to make the transition from the military to the workforce are using job fairs to evaluate their available options.

The fourth annual Black Hills Veteran Job Fair brought in more than 80 vendors looking to find the cream of the crop among the former service members looking for a new career.

The collaborative effort of seven community organizations brought together businesses from a variety of industries including law enforcement, medical services, manufacturing, as well as several government agencies.

Recruiters and job seekers agree that the job fair setting gives both sides the chance to make personal connections beyond the typical application process.

Regional Health Recruiter Casey Carmichael says she enjoys the dialogue that is created. "We are able to ask right away, what sort of positions are you interested in? What sort of skills do you have? What can you bring to regional health? What can regional health provide to you? This is an excellent opportunity for us to find candidates here locally," she said.

"Basically, it cuts the nerves. It helps you show who you are before you even apply and see if there is any mutual interest. It kind of helps reduce the amount of time you do spend searching for jobs, and submitting applications from one place to another," said former Marine and job seeker Kene Roberts.

A job fair preparation class was held in advance of the event to help applicants know what employers are looking for and also give advice on building a solid resume.
