Rural King to open Kanawha County location, job fair this week - WSAZ-TV

UPDATE 5/31/16 @ 11:50 p.m.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With the seeds for growth planted in Cross Lanes, many neighbors across Kanawha County say they are excited for the future for the first time in a long time.

Noah Haverland, of St. Albans, says he was given a boost of hope when he learned that a new Rural King Farm and Home retail store was on the way to Cross Lanes, bringing 70 to 90 jobs along with it.

"I think it's awesome for the area," Haverland said. "It feels like the area is growing and picking back up the pieces."

While company officials say the new business plans to set up shop at the location of the old Cross Lanes Sam's Club along Lakeview Drive, the excitement has spread to Nitro as well.

"Any time you bring in an opportunity for...new jobs, it's good for the community," Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt said.

Casebolt says Nitro's Community Center will be a hub of opportunity for the rest of the week. Rural King officials plan to hold open interviews inside city council chambers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 1-3, to begin the process of filling as many of the positions as possible.

Haverland says, while he has a job already, his girlfriend plans to apply at Rural King to help support the newest member of the family.

"We just had a baby and she's wanting to get back into the work thing," Haverland said.

According Mayor Casebolt, Rural King sells livestock feed, farm equipment, agricultural parts, lawn mowers, work wear, fashion clothing, housewares and toys.

According to the company's website, Rural King has dozens of locations across the tri-state.

"It'll be good for people needing jobs," Casebolt said. "I have no idea how they will compete with other businesses or what that effect will be."

For some in the business of selling similar products on a local level, corporate competition is cause for concern.

"Naturally it would concern anybody when a large company comes to your area," Town and Country Supply Owner Nathan Wills said.

Wills has run his shop for since 1970. He says, while he doesn't want to lose business, jobs are so important to the area, he'll work to coexist.

"We wish [Rural King] well and hope we all have a good mutual relationship together," Wills said.

Co-Manager of the new Rural King location, Dustin Parsons, of Poca, says Rural King is a family-owned company, and has been since it was founded in Mattoon, Ill. in 1960.

Parsons says the company hopes to have the store location open to the public by August or September.
