Times Media Co. will host diversity symposium and job fair - nwitimes.com

A two-day event focused on diversity in the workforce will provide information and opportunities to employers and job-seekers negotiating an evolving employment marketplace.

The Times Media Company's eighth annual Diversity Business Symposium and Career Fair is scheduled for June 9 and 10 at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, Interstate 65 and U.S. 30 in Merrillville.

This is the 8th year The Times Media Co. has produced the symposium and career fair, which is done in conjunction with BusINess magazine and Monster.com, said Roxanne Olejnik, Porter County advertising manager and business development executive at The Times.

"The Times has always had a commitment to encourage inclusion and diversity in the workplace," Olejnik said.

The June 9 session is for human resources and hiring managers. Keynote speaker Jamal Smith, executive director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, will address attendees after an 11:30 a.m. lunch.

The Civil Rights Commission is a state agency focusing on fair housing, equal employment and equal access to education.

Smith's talk will be preceded by a presentation by Kathy Jackson and Kathie Park Savich of Opportunity Enterprises.

Jackson, Opportunity Enterprises' chief human resources officer, will discuss "facts and myths" regarding employing persons with disabilities. Savich, the organization's director of community employment, will talk about JobSource, an Opportunity Enterprises division that works with local employers to give jobs to its clients.

June 10 is dedicated to matching job-seekers and employers. That day's job fair will run from noon to 4 p.m. Job seekers may register online at nwi.com/diversity to avoid the registration line on the day of the event.

"This is one of the best opportunities for job-seekers to meet with the top companies in Northwest Indiana," said Olejnik.

The Diversity Symposium and Career Fair's sponsors are BP, NIPSCO, Strack & Van Til, Indiana University Northwest, and WorkOne. Each of those organizations will have representatives at the job fair, along with a variety of other local and national organizations.
