Textron to hold job fair for 250 positions in Slidell, New Orleans - NOLA.com

Textron Systems will hold a job fair May 9 to hire 250 workers at its New Orleans shipyard and Slidell military vehicle manufacturing plant.

The company is seeking to fill several production-related and skilled craft positions: electricians, material handlers, outfitters, painters, shipfitters, tubing mechanics, welders and truck drivers.

Textron is beefing up its New Orleans staff to fulfill a U.S. Navy order for air-cushioned vehicles, known as ship-to-shore connectors (SSCs). The majority of hires will be at the Slidell site, which is moving into production mode on 500 tactical armored patrol vehicles (TAPVs) for Canada's army, spokesman Tom Williams said.

Earlier this month, Textron announced a $84 million contract option from the U.S. Navy to build two additional ship-to-shore connectors. In 2012, the company received an $214 million contract with options to build up to eight craft by 2020. The Navy's SSC program calls for a total of 73 craft.

Textron's Canadian TAPV order includes an option to build 100 more vehicles. The June 2012 contract was valued at nearly C$603.4 million ($590 million), with an additional five-year service support contract of C$105.4 million ($103 million).

The company intends to make between 30 and 50 hires a month through September, according to an announcement for the job fair.

The job fair signals a reversal in hiring trends for Textron, which gave notice of layoffs to workers last fall. Williams said just more than 100 employees were let go, well short of initial reports of 200.

Williams said those laid off workers were told to monitor company news for production ramp-ups. While they won't be given hiring preference for the current openings, Textron is aware of their abilities, he added.

The job fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Textron's shipyard, 19401 Chef Menteur Highway. Applicants are encouraged to complete applications online to expedite the hiring process as the job fair. Welders and shipfitters will also be required to take welding tests on May 9.

Textron has created a website with more information on the job fair.
