Hiring Our Heroes hosting job fair in Wednesday for military service members ... - MLive.com

Veterans' Job fair in Muskegon May 17, 2013Sgt. Michele Hernandez, left, a recruiter for the Michigan State Police, talks to an attendee at a veterans job fair on Friday, May 17 in Muskegon.

Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, will host a career fair for military families Wednesday at the National Guard Armory in Ypsilanti Township.

The fair is open to veterans, active duty service members, national guard and reserve components and military spouses.

"We've had these events from New York City to Garden City, Kansas," Hiring Our Heroes spokesperson Kim Morton said.

"It depends on the willingness of local partners to work with us and make it happen. In Ann Arbor we've had a lot of support from the Michigan Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve and the Michigan National Guard in addition to the local chamber."

Sixty companies, governmental organizations and non-profits have signed up to participate in the fair. Morton said groups looking to hire are about evenly split between major national businesses and smaller local and regional entities.

The State of Michigan Civil Service Commission, Department of Corrections and State Police will all be looking for potential future employees at the event. Companies participating in the event include Meijer, Quicken Loans and Village Green Apartments.

Morton said that approximately 100 people have pre-registered as job-seekers and she expects about 100 more to show up on the day of the event.

The job fair will be the first in Ann Arbor for Hiring Our Heroes, but the organization has put on more than 615 events since its inception in March 2011. The fairs have led to more than 20,200 job opportunities for veterans and military spouses at more than 1,200 companies.

The fair will be held Wednesday, October 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A pre-fair employment workshop from the University of Phoenix at 9 a.m. will include resume assistance and interview preparation.

Interested job-seekers can register here. Proof of service must be shown for participation. The National Guard Armory is at 7400 S. Huron River Drive.
