Dozens search for employment at job fair - IllinoisHomePage.net
RANTOUL -- Nearly a hundred people came out to look for a job Wednesday. The Rantoul Chamber of Commerce hosts a job fair about twice a year. They say this year was the best they've had so far.
"It's a safe environment for people to fill out an app, learn the tips and ticks and go through the process." Kellie Wahl is the chamber director. And she says job fairs give people of all ages an advantage.
"You see the young, then you see the older and the rest in between," she says.
Multiple people all have the same goal here. But James Hart says it hasn't been an easy task.
"I've been looking for something shoot 5 or 6 months and it is hard to find something that is a living wage."
Hart is a retired veteran. But he still wants to work to support his family.
"I'd like to find a profession i could do until i retire and take care of the wife, take care of the grandkids of course."
Employers like CONAIR are located right in Rantoul. They make products like hairspray. And HR Manager Joe Siedenburg says it's important he fills the open jobs.
"We've got everything from entry level positions in manufacturing and production to supervisory and maintenance openings."
He says the job fair is not only a tool for those looking for a job. But also those needing to make hires.
"It's a great way to connect employers in the area with job seekers in the area."
Sandy Spencer works for Parkland Community College. And she's helping people fill out applications.
"Give info about how to approach a job search and handing out different flyers and hands outs."
Spencer says applying for the positions can be nerve racking. And she wants to make it as easy as she can.
"Forget for two hours about getting a job and think more about making contacts and what kind of job you're looking for."
Champaign County's unemployment rates a little better than the state average. This information comes from the IL Department of Employment Security.
There will be another job fair in Champaign April 20. It will be at the Hilton Garden Inn from 2-6 pm.
